Day 4 – Monday

Today was looking like the best weather wise for the week, certainly probably the warmest, and so today was the day to visit the Bronx Zoo. This was on Kathryn’s to do list. I was still getting over my jetlag and so was up at about 7am again.

I found this really good guide to using the NYC subway. I had worked out quite a bit of these intricacies already. But I had noticed that you can get a weekly ticket for $33 rather than using singles at $2.75 each trip. We left and went to the subway to sort out the tickets.

Kathryn had suggested that we break the journey up into two parks, and visit a nice coffee shop near Bryant Park which also has baked cookies and muffins too. We rode to Times Square and walked across a few blocks to the coffee shop. It hardly has any seating, so we had to perch on the end of the table. I had a nice pumpkin, cranberry and apple muffin. Kathryn had a peanut butter cookie. We grabbed a sandwich for me before heading back to the subway.

The Bronx Zoo is quite far out from downtown Manhattan so it was about  15 stops to the park. We realised afterwards that I’d accidentally put the carpark entrance into my phone to guide us. So we had a short walk from the station to the zoo entrance. We were a bit lost but found it eventually!

The zoo was pretty big, most of the buildings were spread out. We were there for about 4 hours in total. We visited the World of Birds, Mouse House, Madagascar, World of Reptiles, Giraffes and Jungle World. We had chose a good day to go because the zoo was pretty empty. It was cold and sunny, thankfully the buildings were warm inside as I’d chosen to wear shorts as I thought we’d be doing a lot of walking.

We exited the park at the south east side which was close to a subway stop and also closer to Manhattan. We rode the subway all the way back to Fulton Street. It didn’t take too long. We picked up some pasta and bread to have for dinner.

We watched a couple of movies, and made sure Simon was being looked after!
